Happy Almost Fall! Even though Atlanta has dodged the 100+ degree weather, it's still been plenty hot and I think we're all looking forward to a little nip in the air. All in all, it has been a great summer with lots of festivals, concerts and many local acts coming out to play. The Maple Street gang had a great gig in Decatur at Waller's Coffeeshop in August and we hope to do it again in the fall. Be on the lookout! Please be aware that we will be closed on Monday, September 4th in observance of Labor Day.
This month, John decided to introduce the new Fender all mahogany acoustic guitars and compare them to the 15 Series Martins (which are also all mahogany). He took the Fender PD-220e and the PO-220e and compared them to the Martin D-15M and the 00-15M. Chris was lucky enough to plug a Vintage 1968 Fender Telecaster into a 1951 Fender Pro amp. It's amazing how versatile this combination is! On the gig front, Aaron has his latest album release show at Smith's Olde Bar on September 29th. John will be playing with John McEuen at 48 West Live in Wedowee, Al on September 9th. Lindsay is performing at the Highlands Porchfest in Highlands, NC on September 17th. And finally, the Atlanta Guitar Guild is hosting the Texas Guitar Quartet on Saturday, September 16th. (click on the pictures for details). September Maple Street Monthly Picks
Chris - Circa Survive's discography - "Circa Survive has long been a favorite band of mine thanks to their energetic live shows, progressive tendencies, vulnerable lyrics, and unique guitar interplay. I revisited their 7 LP discography for the first time in years and had a blast reliving one of the most important musical periods of my life."
John - May Erlewine "The Real Thing" - I have to thank Aaron for introducing me to this ethereal artist. Deeply personal songs recorded live in the studio with stellar players. I have since discovered all of her work and I consider her one of the shining lights in modern music.
Mark- Steely Dan "Aja" and "Gaucho" - My choices may seem ridiculous, since these 2 titles are pushing 50 years old, but bear with me. I helped myself to a promotional copy of "Aja" The day it came out in '77 at the record shop I worked at, because everyone was raving about it, but the music went right over my head, in spite of me being quite the progressive rocker. For years, fellow musicians sang its praises, so I decided to re-assess. During COVID, I borrowed it and "Gaucho" and dove deep. How could I have missed this back when it first came out?!? They are 2 of the best records I have EVER heard. Better late than never, I guess! Wow....
Brandon- Explosions In The Sky - I have not listened to these heroes from Austin, Texas in probably half my life, but have never forgotten their live performance from The Wall Of Sound all of the way back in 2006, and certainly wouldn't miss an opportunity to revisit their sometimes melodic, sometimes thunderous live performances. Catch them at The Eastern on September 15th.
Lindsay - WRAS (88.5 FM), WRFG (89.3 FM), and WABE (90.1) - I've been admittedly lax with regard to listening to albums of late, opting to browse the airwaves instead. In addition to its GPB affiliation, GA State University's WRAS offers all the variety of a college radio station with everything from techno to jam band shows. Located in Little 5 Points, WRFG is our community radio station for music and progressive information. WRFG offers a lot of variety and charm in its programming. One of my long-time favorites, which occasionally features in-studio performances (including yours truly once or twice in the past) is Sagebrush Boogie, hosted by our customer and friend, Dave Chamberlain. WABE (NPR) is, of course, an excellent source for in-depth and intelligently presented news, but I often enjoy programs like Hidden Brain or the Moth Radio Hour (a storytelling show) on my evening commutes.
Aaron - Baritone guitars in open tuning - In the spirit of staying inspired on guitar, I've been converted into a baritone maniac by artists like The Bros. Landreth and Ariel Posen. The shift in timbre and feel from E standard to open B tuning has opened the floodgates of creativity for me, especially when played with a slide. The juxtaposition of a lightly fuzzed baritone sound being played on soul and R&B music is simply too pleasing not to pursue. If you're feeling stuck, I'd highly recommend trying this out!
